1

Arrival in Phnom Penh

Welcome to Phnom Penh - the capital of Cambodia, located in the center of the country, at the confluence of the Tonle Sap and the Mekong rivers, a strategic place chosen after the decline of Angkor as a capital. Phnom Penh owes its difference to other Asian capitals, thanks to the modernity coupled with provincial charm and the French-colonial touches set amongst Angkorian monuments. Your eyes won't ever be bored during a leisurely tour around the different streets.

Upon arrival at Phnom Penh airport, you will meet your driver and travel to your hotel.

Phnom Penh City Tour

Phnom penh

The capital city of Cambodia is located at the meeting point of three rivers: the Bassac, the massive Tonle and the impressive Mekong. Phnom Penh owes its difference to other Asian capitals, thanks to the modernity coupled with provincial charm and the French-colonial touches set amongst Angkorian monuments. Your eyes won't ever get bored during a leisurely tour around the different streets. The journey through the bustling capital will begin with a visit to the National Museum. It is the largest of the country as it showcases the world's greatest collections of Khmer sculptures, ceramics and ethnographics. The last stop is at the Royal Palace which strikingly dominates the skyline of the city. Previously, the complex of 4 main areas functioned as the Royal Residence of the King of Cambodia. Then, continue on to Phnom Penh Central market for some shopping time at your leisure. After the tour, head back to the hotel

Nowadays Vs. The Past: Phnom Penh’s colonial history on a tablet

Today, both your tuk-tuk driver and a handy information tablet will be leading you to 22 different sites around the city. Select your language, put the headphones on and while sitting comfortably in the tuktuk, the driver will make stops in front of all the historic places. No need to move from your tuk-tuk, the tablet has all the information you need!

When you are in front of each site, you can click on a short movie dedicated to that site, listen to the history, view the historic photos, and virtually enter some places that are not open to the public. All the information and explanations provided are the culmination of years of research by historians, pieced together with knowledge obtained from different archives.

This is a new and very original way to discover Phnom Penh's heritage: having a multi-language tablet revealing how the sites used to be while you’re also observing how they are nowadays. Enjoy the tour!

Note: Recommended the whole year round (in Rainy Season from June to November we highly recommend to start in the morning)

Discover the capital, one flavor at a time

At 17:00 in your hotel lobby, meet and greet your local leader for tonight’s tasty experience. Street food always was, and still is, an essential part of Phnom Penh’s daily life and culture. This private tour, led by local aficionados, gives you the chance to experience another part of the rich diversity of traditional Khmer cuisine and habits!

Timed by the sunset, the evening starts with a panoramic view of Phnom Penh. Then, proceed to the local Kandal market, where you can share a typical street BBQ-style meal and ice-dessert, sitting by the roadside, while taking in the lively atmosphere of the evening hours. While strolling around the market, awaken your curiosity by exploring the different goods offered here - a perfect time to take unique pictures and become immersed in the bustling market atmosphere. Finally, relax to the sound of local Khmer singers with a cold beer in hand and a final snack. Renowned for launching new jazz singers, the local restaurant you will visit is also the last opportunity to try out a variety of very unusual dishes. These gastronomic highlights guarantee a flavor-filled evening to savor!

On the road to Battambang

Phnom penh, Battambang

You will travel to Battambang, located Northwest of Phnom Penh, officially remains the second biggest city of the country, even if its development is not as fast as that of Siem Reap. On your way to Battambang, you will have several interesting stops. First stop, on the Tonle Sap Lake riverside, in the village of the goldsmiths, experts in working with the precious metal. Nearby, at the top of a hill, you will see Oudong, which nowadays is a place of pilgrimage but before was one of the capitals of the Cambodian kingdom. You will also find ancient pagodas which are home to some King’s relics and other more recent buildings dedicated to Buddha. Up there, take a deep breath and admire Cambodia’s nature like its forest, the flat landscape, the rice fields, the lakes and the local villages with their pagodas.

Continue your journey towards Kompong Chhnang located at the meeting point of the massive lake Tonle Sap. On the lake, you will admire the different floating villages. The name of Kompong Chhnang (“port of pottery”) comes from its economy based on terracotta and the subsequent production of useful clay items. After leaving Kompong Chhnang, you will reach Pursat. This city owns its name due to the marble quarries surrounding the city. There, you will visit a workshop where the workers are crafting this marble into sculptures, like little buddhas, lingas, and other items. Back on the road, you will travel passing the many rice fields. Eventually you will see a statue of a black giant holding a wooden stick, before arriving in Battambang.

Distances: 300 km - Due to the development of the road network in Cambodia, the duration of transfer may be approximatively 6 to 7 hours.

Ride the Original Bamboo Train

The Bamboo train is one of the most famous attractions in Battambang. Originally, it was used as a genuine means of wartime people-carrying, and was absolutely invaluable in transporting fighters from province to province. Nowadays, locals still use the railway to transport rice bags, and, of course, to simply get around! It’s a unique and seriously fun

way to see Battambang’s most beautiful rural scenery, and a supremely authentic way to admire the region’s stunning countryside. Do as the locals do, and hop on the Bamboo train!

Duration: 45 minutes

Note :

-    This bamboo train was closed in October 2017 as the government moved ahead with plans to rebuild the country’s northern railroad that links Phnom Penh to the Thai Border

-    Do as the local does: The national trains pass by this railway, sometimes unscheduled, throughout the day. Therefore, the bamboo train team will inform our guests when the train will pass and advise them on how to remove the “Khmer-style lorry” when the train approaches.

Siem reap, Phnom penh

During this workshop, you will be trained and guided by professional smok makers. You will start with a palm leaf that has already been cut and dyed as the process is quite long, but then you will be trained how to weave the box. Once finished, your small box will be yours to take back home as a souvenir.

This private sunset cruise on a well-equipped boat will enable you to experience the great lake in an exceptionally relaxed and exclusive atmosphere. Before sunset, you will be welcomed at the pier by the friendly boat crew and start your scenic cruise passing by floating farms, floating houses and local fishing boats out on the Tonle Sap Lake. You will have the chance to feast on a selection of nicely assorted and presented finger food and snacks as well as imported wine and soft drinks. Out on the lake, the engine will stop and you will float peacefully to experience the magnificent sunset, take your time for a chat and leave all your cares behind.

You will then cruise back to the pier to start your quick travel to Siem Reap.

Immersion in a Cambodian family

Siem reap, Phnom penh

Today, you will enjoy your day as a Cambodian family. It will start with a playful and challenging activity: a mini golf session in a fun setting with mini imitations of the Angkor temples. After the game, you will travel to the surrounding countryside of Siem Reap and you will walk through the rice fields to reach a small temple which is hidden in the forest. Away from the tourist paths, you will feel you have become explorers looking for a secret temple. Next will be a short travel to the nearby lake: Trav Kod, a place where Khmer families like to spend time at the weekend.

In the afternoon, you will have the opportunity to go for a swim (from July to January), rest in the hammocks or play on the swings and slides with your children. It will also be possible to get some petanque balls or even a football.

At the end of the day, you will head back to Siem Reap to enjoy a tour in a captive balloon. This 10-minute-flight will enable you to admire the beauty and magnificence of the Angkor site, 100 meters above the ground. You will then travel along Road 60, which at that time starts to come alive, the local merchants setting up their small shops and offering their specialities: fruits, skewers, noodles, soup and even grilled insects. It will be a great opportunity to taste some uncommon and surprising flavors. It is also a place that is very much appreciated by Khmer families as a small funfair is set up there. Trampoline, carousel, dart games... For the little ones, whether they are foreign or Khmer, this will be a time to meet each other and share the universal language of play.
