Discovering Luang Prabang by bicycle

Luang prabang

Today you will explore the magnificent UNESCO protected historical sites of the city by bicycle. The activity will start in the morning before it gets too hot. This is the best time of day to explore the area because it is the time when the locals are returning from the market, children are on their way to school, and you can still see the morning mist on the rivers.

The programme will take you in a zigzag across town via some quiet, charming little streets as well as some of the more vibrant main streets. You will make a stop to visit the oldest temples of Luang Prabang, Wat Visoun and Wat Aham, which were built during the reign of King Wisunarat in 1513. Then you will climb the relatively easy 328 steps up to the top of the mysterious Mount Phousi . The panoramic views from the top are breathtaking!

From there, you will go back down to the Royal Palace which is now the National Museum, built in 1904 during the French colonial period. Then, a short visit to Wat Mai, one of the most elaborately decorated temples in the whole city, and on to a river terrace where the smaller Nam Khan River meets the powerful Mekong River. The last temple you will visit is the most impressive of all - the Wat Xiengthong, also known as the 'Temple of the Golden City'

Introduction to rice culture and discovery of the waterfalls of Kuang Si

Luang prabang

In Southeast Asia, rice and noodles are the staple food, and are as important as bread is for Europeans. Just along a little dirt track, you can find an organic rice farm in an idyllic setting. On arrival, you will meet a very charismatic Hmong farmer, Lao Lee, who will take you around the rice fields to show you the different stages of the process from the small sprouts to the transformation into noodles.

You will learn how to germinate the seeds before sowing them in the mud, and then to work the field with a buffalo so you can plant the sprouts while singing traditional farming songs. Next, you will go to a field where you will learn how to harvest the mature plants and rinse the grains to extract the rice. Then, collect the rice and grind it into powder before letting it ferment into a glutinous dough. For the next step, you will be joined by the noodle-master who will teach you how to make your own noodles. Finally you will cook your noodles together with some vegetables from the organic garden before tasting them in a delicious bowl of soup !

In the afternoon, head south to get to the waterfalls of Kuang Si. These waterfalls made of karst rock formations and numerous pools of turquoise water are a must-see in the north of Laos. Nowadays, the lower part of the falls is a public park where you can rest and enjoy the refreshing shade from the trees. The most interesting part for visitors, though, is a little further along where lots of natural rock pools have formed due to erosion, where you can bathe and bask.

The villagers will be happy to show you how they make fishing nets and rice baskets, as well as their way of preparing glutinous rice. The journey continues to another island where a fisherman will show you how to cast a traditional fishing net. Try to get the hang of it before returning to the pier at Don Det.

In the afternoon, it is time for a bicycle ride to see the marvels of the island, the famous Liphi waterfalls and the old locomotive that dates back to the French colonial period. In the south of the island, near the village of Ban Hang Khone, you will take a boat past the islands that border Cambodia. With a bit of luck, the dolphins from Irrawaddy might be out and about.
